Perfomance Lab
Individual Research. Collective Work.
The Performance Lab is a workshop for artistic research and performance creation.
Each cycle begins with a shared dramaturgical axis — an idea, a question, or a theme — and develops through research, experimentation, and creation.
Each participant follows their own research path and develops a personal performance work.
Along the way, the different works begin to enter into dialogue with one another. At the end of the cycle, they come together in a single collective performance, with the dramaturgical and directorial composition of Vera Iona Papadopoulou.
The work is presented publicly.
HOW WE WORK
The Performance Lab functions as a space for research, experimentation, and project development.
Through texts, works by contemporary and historical artists, personal archives, images, objects, memories, scores, and practical exercises, we explore different paths towards creating performance.
Ideas are tested in the space.
They change.
They fail.
They are tested again.
Each participant gradually develops their own artistic proposal, while at the same time following and taking part in the development of the group’s work.
The Lab is not based on one specific performance technique. The aim is to develop a personal artistic language and a complete work.
01 — THE HOUSE
Where do we live?
What does home mean?
A place.
A body.
A family.
A language.
A memory.
A refuge.
A confinement.
A place we left behind.
Or a place we return to.
The first cycle of the Performance Lab begins with home as a real, imagined, and lived space.
Through literary and theoretical texts, artists’ works, personal archives, objects, images, and memories, each participant is invited to explore their own relationship with the idea of home and gradually transform it into performance.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
During the Lab you will:
- research a shared dramaturgical axis through your own personal and artistic perspective
- work with texts, images, objects, archives, and personal material
- experiment with the body, space, time, action, and the relationship with the audience
- transform your research into performative material
- develop, test, and evolve a personal performance work
- participate in the creation of the final collective performance
- present the work publicly
FROM INDIVIDUAL WORK
TO COLLECTIVE PERFORMANCE
Each participant creates their own work.
As the cycle develops, the different performances begin to come together: through space, time, images, actions, and the relationships that are created between them.
In the final stage of the Lab, the personal works are composed into a single collective performance / performative exhibition, without losing their autonomy and distinctive voice.
The final composition and dramaturgy are carried out by Vera Iona Papadopoulou in dialogue with the participants.
INDIVIDUAL RESEARCH.
COLLECTIVE WORK.
WHO IS IT FOR IT
The Performance Lab is aimed at performance artists, visual artists, actors, directors, dancers, filmmakers, musicians, and creators from different fields who want to develop their artistic practice through performance.
You do not need to have a completed work or a specific idea before you begin.
However, you do need to want to research, experiment, and create a work during the Lab.
A NEW WORK EACH CYCLE
Each cycle of the Performance Lab begins with a new dramaturgical axis and leads to a new collective work.
You can take part in one cycle or return for the next ones, each time developing a new performance and expanding your personal artistic practice.
